Single Phase vs Three Phase Wiring: Does It Matter for Your Smart Home?
This question comes up a lot, usually from clients in landed properties: "my house is three phase, does that change how the smart switches get wired, or how Home Assistant gets set up?" It is a fair question because "three phase" sounds like it should matter for something as electronics-heavy as a smart home. It does not, and here is why.

What single phase and three phase actually mean
Electricity comes into your home as one or more "live" wires plus a neutral. Single phase supply means there is 1 live wire delivering power. Three phase supply means there are 3 live wires delivering power, timed slightly differently from each other so that the total load can be spread across all three instead of running through one wire alone.
In Singapore, most HDB flats and condo units run on single phase supply, since the total electrical load of a typical unit does not need more than that. Landed properties, and some larger or older developments, are often provisioned with three phase supply because the total load across the house (multiple aircon compressors, ovens, heaters, EV chargers, and so on) is higher, and spreading that load across three phases keeps things balanced. Why three phase is about load, not zones
A common misunderstanding is that three phase means the house is split into three independent "zones", so that only the affected zone loses power if something goes wrong. That is not quite how it works.
At your distribution board (DB), every individual circuit, whether it is a lighting circuit, a socket circuit, or an aircon circuit, has its own MCB (miniature circuit breaker). If a circuit has a fault and trips, that circuit's MCB trips, and only that circuit loses power. This is true whether your home is single phase or three phase.
What three phase gives you is the option to distribute those circuits across 3 live wires instead of 1, so the electrician can balance the load evenly. Practically, this does mean that if something goes wrong with the incoming supply on one phase, only the circuits wired to that phase are affected, while circuits on the other two phases keep running. But this is a difference in how much of the house is affected by a main supply issue, not a difference in how individual circuits or MCBs behave day to day.
Does this affect smart switch wiring?
No. A smart switch, relay, or dimmer is wired to a single circuit, with a live, neutral, and load connection at that specific point (plus a ground where applicable). It does not know or care whether the phase feeding that circuit is one of three phases or the only phase in the house, and the wiring at the switch itself is identical either way.

Does this affect Home Assistant setup?
No. Home Assistant communicates with your smart devices over your home network, WiFi, or wireless protocols like Zigbee or Matter, not through the electrical wiring itself. Whether your home runs single phase or three phase has zero bearing on how Home Assistant discovers devices, how automations are built, or how the dashboard is configured. The electrical phase is purely a supply-side consideration handled at the DB; it sits below the smart home layer entirely.
When phase does matter
Phase does matter for a few things, just not for smart home wiring:
- Total load capacity. If you are adding heavy loads (EV charger, multiple aircon systems, induction hob), your electrician needs to know what supply you have to plan capacity properly.
- Balancing new circuits. When adding new circuits to a three phase home, an electrician will try to balance the load across the three phases rather than dumping everything onto one.
- Renovation and DB upgrades. If you are upgrading your DB as part of a renovation, knowing your phase setup affects what DB and breakers get specified.
