1. Scope of Service
The Layman Smart Home People Pte. Ltd. provides consultation, integration, and configuration services for smart home automation systems, primarily using the Home Assistant platform.
Our services typically include:
- System architecture design and planning
- Software configuration and setup
- Integration of compatible devices on a best-effort basis
- Guidance and handover training
What this means in practice:
Every home is different. Device compatibility, existing infrastructure, and household requirements vary significantly. We work to integrate your devices and automations to the best extent technically feasible, but outcomes depend on factors including:
- Hardware compatibility and firmware limitations
- Existing wiring and network infrastructure
- Device manufacturer support and ongoing updates
- Third-party service availability
Where integration is limited or not possible, we will explain constraints clearly and recommend practical alternatives.
2. Hardware and Equipment
Unless explicitly stated in a signed quotation:
- Service fees exclude hardware costs. Prices quoted cover configuration, integration, and setup — not the physical devices themselves.
- You may provide your own compatible hardware or request us to procure items on your behalf at current market rates.
- We are not the manufacturer of smart home devices. Manufacturers' warranties and support terms apply to the hardware itself.
We provide guidance on device selection but cannot guarantee future compatibility if manufacturers discontinue support, change APIs, or release breaking firmware updates.
3. Service Warranty (12 Months)
We provide a 12-month limited warranty on our integration and configuration work, covering:
- Correction of configuration errors or software bugs directly caused by our initial setup
- Reasonable support for Home Assistant system issues within our scope of work
- Guidance on system use and basic troubleshooting
This warranty does not cover:
- Issues caused by unauthorized changes to the system by the user or third parties
- Device failures due to hardware defects (covered by manufacturers' warranties)
- Problems arising from internet service provider or home network infrastructure failures
- Compatibility issues caused by third-party firmware or service updates released after handover
- Changes in device manufacturer API or cloud service availability
- Normal wear and tear, power surges, or environmental damage
Warranty service is provided on a reasonable-effort basis during business hours. Emergency or after-hours support may incur additional charges.
4. Consultation & Appointments
Our consultations and Experience Center visits are by appointment only.
We reserve the right to reschedule or cancel appointments with reasonable notice due to unforeseen circumstances. We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate rescheduling requests.
5. Realistic Expectations
Smart home systems depend on many factors beyond our direct control, including:
- Device manufacturer support and firmware stability
- Home network reliability and coverage
- Internet service provider uptime
- Third-party cloud service availability
- User behavior and household routines
We design systems to work reliably under normal conditions and provide local-first operation where feasible. However, we cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation or compatibility with all future devices and services.
Our consultation process is designed to set realistic expectations before work begins.
6. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by Singapore law:
- The Layman Smart Home People Pte. Ltd. shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from the use or inability to use the smart home system.
- This includes but is not limited to: data loss, security breaches resulting from user negligence, property damage from device malfunction, or lost productivity.
- Our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount paid for the specific service giving rise to the claim.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
7. Refunds and Cancellations
- Consultation fees are non-refundable once an appointment has been confirmed and attended.
- Service cancellations made after work has commenced may incur charges for time and materials already invested, as outlined in your quotation.
- Refunds for completed work are generally not provided if the system functions according to the agreed scope, even if expectations were misaligned. This is why our consultation process emphasizes clarity upfront.
Disputes regarding service quality will be handled on a case-by-case basis in good faith.
8. Intellectual Property
- Configurations and automations we create for your home remain your property after handover.
- Our methodology, documentation templates, and proprietary tools remain our intellectual property.
- You may modify your system after handover, but we are not responsible for issues arising from changes made outside our scope.
9. Post-Warranty Support
After the 12-month warranty period:
- Support is available on a time-and-materials basis
- Rates will be communicated clearly before work begins
- We aim to remain available for reasonable follow-up questions and minor guidance at no charge, but extensive troubleshooting or system changes may incur fees
10. Governing Law
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Singapore.
Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Singapore courts.
11. Changes to These Terms
We reserve the right to modify these terms at any time. Significant changes will be communicated via our website or email to existing clients.
Continued use of our services after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
