Our Philosophy#
Smart Homes, Designed With Real Life in Mind#
Many smart home systems look impressive on paper, but fall apart in daily use — apps that don’t talk to each other, features that stop working when the internet is down, and setups that are difficult for the rest of the household to understand.
At Layman Smart Home, we take a practical approach to smart home installation in Singapore, focusing on thoughtful design, realistic expectations, and long-term usability.
Before a home is smart, it should first function as a normal home.
That means we design systems so that:
- Core functions are designed to continue working locally, even during internet outages
- Physical switches and manual controls remain usable where hardware allows
- Automations support daily routines instead of forcing lifestyle changes
Designed for Flexibility
Built with open standards to adapt to renovations, upgrades, and changing needs.
Local-First by Design
Automations run locally to remain responsive, even during connectivity issues.
Built for Shared Homes
Designed for households with multiple users, routines, and priorities.
In a well-designed smart home, technology should stay in the background.
Lights respond naturally to changes in the environment. Climate control follows actual usage patterns. Automation enhances daily life quietly, without demanding attention.
Every smart home is designed around practical constraints such as existing infrastructure, device availability, and homeowner priorities.
Our Story#
TL;DR We spent years breaking, fixing, and rebuilding our own smart homes. Layman Smart Home exists so you don’t have to.
The ideas behind Layman Smart Home started long before the company itself.
Samuel began his smart home journey in 2020, during COVID, while working on the HIP project at his parents’ flat — learning how to make their home safer and manageable remotely after moving out. Bernard followed in 2023, during his own home renovation, where every “smart” decision required extensive research, testing, and iteration.
Like many homeowners in Singapore, we tried almost everything on the market — Google Home, Aqara, Tuya, HomeKit, SmartThings, BroadLink, Tapo. Each system worked on its own, but none worked well together. Updates broke setups. Internet outages disabled features. Vendors shut down. Even sales staff often couldn’t clearly explain compatibility.
The hardest part wasn’t installation. It was knowing where to begin, and how to design a smart home that would continue to make sense years later.
That’s when we discovered Home Assistant.
Home Assistant gave us local control, reduced cloud dependence, and the flexibility to combine devices across brands and generations. Older hardware continued to function, while newer standards like Matter could be adopted gradually. When connectivity issues occurred, core home functions remained usable.
We began using Home Assistant across our own homes, our office, and shared community spaces. Friends and relatives started asking for help with their smart home renovations, and we realised how common the same challenges and questions were.
So in late 2024, we formally started Layman Smart Home — to be the starting point we wish we had. A practical, privacy-first smart home service focused on Home Assistant, designed for Singapore homes, and built with longevity in mind.
Home Assistant Specialists in Singapore#
While many providers rely on proprietary ecosystems, we focus on Home Assistant as a flexible and open platform for smart homes.
Home Assistant is widely regarded as a leading solution for interoperability, privacy-focused design, and local-first control. It allows different brands, protocols, and generations of devices to work together under one system.
We specialise in setting up Home Assistant in a way that is usable for real households — not just hobbyists — and provide a clear starting point that families can grow into over time.

What Sets Us Apart#
Local Context Matters#
We understand the realities of Singapore homes:
- Thick concrete walls in HDB flats
- Tropical humidity affecting sensors and outdoor devices
- Local appliance standards and infrastructure
- Common household systems such as Starmex air-conditioning and Haiku fans
No Forced Lock-In#
We design systems around open standards instead of tying you to a single brand. Our recommendations are based on suitability and long-term flexibility — whether that means cost-efficient Zigbee devices or newer Matter-based solutions.
Education First#
We walk you through how your system works, provide clear documentation, and remain available for reasonable follow-up questions as you learn and grow your smart home.
